Trading Stock Index Futures

Trading stock index futures, such as ES & NQ (the mini S&P and the mini NASDAQ, which I trade), are not your ordinary futures. How do I know this? Simple, I looked at the history.

When I developed my futures and Forex systems, I found that by and large trend following type entries historically worked the best. But not with stock index futures. With these, I found that timeframes are different, and entry types had to be different, when compared to futures and forex.

I use these "special" entries in my MiniPower Catcher stock index system.

In the next post, I'll discuss what exactly these entries are.

What Trend Catcher Trades

You may have heard of my system "Trend Catcher." It finished in 2nd place in a futures trading contest in 2005, and is in 1st place in 2006 (through today 10/20, at least). So, what does Trend Catcher trade?

This system trades a basket of commodities, all with the same entry and exit logic. Currencies such as Japanese Yen and Canadian Dollar, agriculturals like Corn. Energies are represented by Crude Oil, and softs are traded via Cotton and Coffee. There are also a few interest rate financial futures like the 10 year note, 5 year note and the Eurodollar.

So, why trade so many different commodities? A couple of reasons jump out. First, trading futures that have little or no correlation tends to smooth out the equity curve (reducing drawdown). That's pretty nice. As an example, Corn and Coffee don't have a high degree of correlation.

A second reason for trading the basket of futures is that, since Trend Catcher entry/exit logic is same for all, it shows the system's robustness. The signals aren't tailored for one specific market. This usually, but not always, translates into better trading results going forward.

Next time, I'll discuss how I came up with the basket of futures I use in Trend Catcher.

Why Trade Forex?

1. It is a huge market (trillions of dollars)

2. You can achieve high leverage (but that can also bite you!)

3. It is active 24 hours a day, 5.5 days per week.

4. There are a lot of neophytes in this market, who seem to be willing to give the better players their money. Have you seen the Forex infomercials? What kind of people are attracted to these.

How Do I Trade Stock Indices?

I think it is important to trade stock indices, for a couple of reasons. First, trading stock indices is a good way to balance/supplement your stock portfolio. Second, the stock index futures are very liquid, with high volume and low slippage. Oh, and they trade 24 hours a day.

I trade the e-mini S&P (ES) and the mini-Nasdaq (NQ). These are both high volume, with large daily ranges.

I developed a system to trade these indices, that watches the market 24 hours a day, but trades only during the most active daytime hours.

I call this system "MiniPower Catcher."

What is "Trend Catcher?"

People frequently ask me "What is Trend Catcher, and how did you develop it?" So, I feel it is important to give a brief overview of Trend Catcher, and how it works.

Trend Catcher is a trend following system that uses a breakout, with an oscillator confirmation, to enter the market. Once it is in the market, money management stops and profit protection kicks in, and is monitored closely.

I developed Trend Catcher with Tradestation software, looking at the last 20 years of daily data. Instead of backtest optimization, I utilized walkforward optimization, which I found works much better into the future.

For the next Trend Catcher post, I'll tell you what markets it trades.
